Can PET Plastic Bottles Be Reused?

🤔 Have you ever thought about whether common plastic bottles, such as mineral water bottles and carbonated beverage bottles, can be reused? Today we will discuss this issue.

📜 Firstly, we need to understand that these plastic bottles usually have a numerical identifier at the bottom, such as the number "1". This number represents the type of plastic. For "1" plastic, which is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), there are some specific usage restrictions.

🔥 PET plastic bottles, as their name suggests, are heat-resistant up to 70 degrees Celsius. If exposed to high temperatures or heating, it may deform and even release harmful substances to the human body. Studies have shown that PET water bottles may release plasticizers (DEHP) after more than 10 months of use. DEHP is a phthalate chemical that is considered an environmental hormone and even carries a carcinogenic risk.

🌞 In summer, if mineral water is left in the car for a long time, due to the high temperature inside the car, the temperature in the trunk may reach 60 ℃, which can cause trace amounts of DEHP to dissolve in the PET bottle body. Long term consumption of such water may pose a health hazard. Therefore, it is not recommended to place PET plastic bottles in cars to bask in the sun, nor is it recommended to use them to store substances such as alcohol and oil.

🌈 So, besides PET, are there any other types of plastic bottles? of course! For example, "2" HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles are commonly used in white medicine bottles, cleaning products, bath products, etc. Although they look beautiful, they are not suitable for use as water bottles or food containers.

💡 Similarly, packaging made of "3" PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material may produce toxic substances at high temperatures, making it unsuitable for storing drinking water and food. And "4" LDPE (low-density polyethylene) is mainly used for cling film, etc. It cannot be heated or reused.

🎉 On the contrary, plastic bottles made of "5" PP (polypropylene), such as soybean milk bottles, yogurt bottles, juice drink bottles, etc., with a melting point of 167 ℃, can be put into the plastic box of the microwave oven or reused after careful cleaning. However, it should be noted that some microwave oven specific boxes have a body made of PP material, but the lid may be made of PET material, which cannot be heated.

🍽️ The instant noodle box and fast food box made of PS (polystyrene) material with size "6" have a wide temperature range and good flexibility, but cannot be heated. Encountering high temperatures can release polystyrene, so it is not recommended to use boxes made of this material to package high temperature and oily foods.

🌈 Finally, water bottles, kettles, space cups, and baby bottles made of polycarbonate (PC) material for "7" need to be added with bisphenol A during the synthesis process, which may cause precocious puberty in children. Therefore, since March 2011, the production of baby bottles containing bisphenol A has been prohibited. This type of water cup material cannot be directly exposed to sunlight or heated.

💡 Overall, different types of plastic bottles have different usage restrictions and precautions. For the sake of health and safety, we should choose suitable plastic products and use them correctly.
